no name presentation

I really likes the no name story. I wish the group had more time to present the material. I thought the fortune cookie ideal was very unique and creative. The cartoon character was terrific. If you were explaining this story in an actually classroom it is an excellent ideal to grab children's attention. I am not sure what the cartoon was but I think it was a character maybe from Hello Kitty Friends. humm not sure.. The story was a story that several children from different diverse families could relate to. It had a positive ending for the main boy in the story.

presentations on mon

I enjoyed all the presentations on Mon night. I found unique features in all of the presentations. I really enjoyed the Anna Frank activity. I believe the class got a clear picture of the space the people were confined in for such a long period of time. I also thought the acting was very powerful and emotional as we see the view of the child being frightened and torn away from her loved ones.

read alouds

I think the read alouds are wonderful. When a teacher is excited to read a book the students are often excited too. I think the ideal of getting the students to relax and the teacher reads helps the struggling readers. I do not read my son bed time stories ( because this guy would only not go to sleep) I read to him in the afternoon. The baby loves it! We go outside with a snack and sit on the grass. He is only 12 months old. He sits there and listens to the story. He smiles at funny parts I am reading. He sometimes touches the book and points to the words on the page. I am sure all children love to be read to. I think an important key to remember is making the area comfy and sounding interesting as you read.

ch10

I think reading out loud to children is important. I remember in kinder,1st,2nd grades we use to order books from scholastic; however, we were always told to put them in our desk and look at them later or at home. Well "later" in class never came and "at home" kinda got lost in my parents routine schedule. It wasn't until 3rd grade that my teacher Mrs C. introduced reading for for and enjoyment. She read Beverly Clearly books to the class. My favorite was Henry, Ribsy, Ralph the mouse, and Romona. I thought the teacher was cool and it encouraged me to read on my own. Before that experience I assumed reading was something you had to do to get a good grade in class. It never occur ed to me that people read things for fun! The teacher often took us to the library to check out fun books to read. This teacher was the only teacher I ever encountered that did this. The other teachers only took us to the library to pick out a book for a book report ect. You knew the routine and what was expected to get a good grade. I hope more teachers out there take the time to read to their students. One person can make a difference. We went to the library every Friday. I spent my boring weekends ( only child) reading fun books! The teacher said we could write her letters over the weekend telling her all about any books we read. I could not not wait to read my book and I loved the ideal of writing the teacher a letter about the books. She always responded back! Looking back on it now I realize it was all a cleaver trick to get the kids to read!

ch 9

Non fiction books are great! They sure have changed since I was a kid and hated reading the boring things. I think these wonderful new books are so fabulous for children to learn and most of all enjoy! Wow what a concept for some genius to create! Books for children that they enjoy reading and can learn from!

ch9& class discussion

I probably won't ever forget tonight's discussion on the stiletto stoners. Personally I do not smoke pot, cigarettes, drugs, or even drink. I did recently find out an acquaintance of mine decided to tell me she smoked pot all through her pregnancy! I was shocked and her view about it was very differently from mine! She is from California and apparently the area she is from this is common practice! When I told her about the dangers of smoking pot while you are pregnant she looked at me as if I was speaking a foreign language! I am amazed at the different attitudes people have on these types of issues. I do think information should be given to students on the dangers of these types of things just in case the children are coming from a household like my acquaintance!

ch8 fiction

I enjoy fiction books. I found it interesting to see what type of fiction books other classmates enjoy reading. I noticed there was a wide variety of interest. I am sure it is the same for children in a classroom. I personally do not enjoy romance books; however, I notice a classmate said she loved to read about love stories that never really happen. lol I noticed some people enjoy scary stories! I recently worked at a children's home. The children were toddlers ( age 3-5) and they also enjoyed this scary stuff! The kids liked Goosebumps. I was shocked! They would sit there glued to the tv gobbling up chili and popcorn. The kids would listen to the books too! hummm I believe these books were not meant for toddlers but the staff there read it to them all the time and the kids were never scared! Maybe I'm a chicken. Sometimes as a small child I was often scared of The Count on Seseme Street!

ch 7

Picture books are wonderful. Children and adults enjoy looking at pictures as they read. I think it is a tool to help the children expand their imaginations. I have noticed sometimes the children will look at a picture and want to create their own story of what is happening. This is a great way to get them reading and writing. I say go ahead and read the picture book then let the children make up their own stories to the pictures. let them write their stories and publish it in the classroom.

ch 6 traditional literature

I now know there is a reason for starting a book with once upon a time in a far far away etc. I did not know that these books are started in that manner as a way to continue through decades and to appeal to different areas. As a child reading these books I often got tired of the books starting that way and they completely lost my attention. Really couldn't we have been more creative? I believe fairy tales could have started differently. I do love the "fractured folktales". I find them to be amusing and more creative. I also learned that these tales are influenced by the oral tradition of culture.

author+down syndrome

I would like to share these wonderful books on children with down syndrome. These books will easily include your students with down syndrome in the classroom. They are wonderful books introducing children to diversity.

The ABC book displays each letter of the alaphabet that is represented by a child with Down syndrome. The book is designed for preschool to first grade, each page also has the corresponding letter and name of the object, to encourage letter and word recognition. There is also a companion book "1 2 3 for You and Me".

Russ and the Firehouse is about a five-year-old boy with Down syndrome. the story is about Russ and his uncle at the firehouse. Author Janet Elizabeth Rickert's focuses on the child and not his special needs.
Chimp is about a girl with Down syndrome, no mention is made of her special needs. The author Berniece Rabe tells the story of Misty and her dad searching for her stuffed animal. Most young children enjoy stories of animals.

ch 5 poetry+book I AM OF TWO PLACES

Poetry was never one of my favorite subjects. It was probably the way it was taught to me. I sat in class, listened to the teacher, but all I heard was blah blah blah, determined what she wanted to see and produced a paper for an A. I would like to think that I can come up with creative ways to introduce children to poetry. I realize it is important as a teacher to try to be positive about the subject. I hope I will be able to come up with fun activities on poetry. I think an important issua to remember is to let the children pick topics that they are interested in. I did find a wonderful childrens book that teaches children about poetry. the poems are actual poems that young children have written. They are poems telling the children's experiences of having ties to both America and Latin America. one of the peoms is a little girl account of being a translater from spanish to english for her parents. the child was 10 years old when she wrote the poem. Once reading these peoms I will never forget the children.

author +wheelchair

I would like to include children's books that illistrate children, friends, or family members in wheelchairs. I think it is appropriate to have these books in your classroom library. As a teacher we will have students in our class that are in wheelchairs and you want something that will represent them in the classroom.

4th author Marianne Richmond

Marianne Richmond

This is a book about adoption written by Marianne Richmond. I feel this is a diverse book to introduce to students. Teachers will have students in their class that are adopted and know about their adoption. It would be nice for a child to see a book that represents something they can relate to. I believe just by having a book like this in a classroom it helps the adoptive student be included in the class. This book also teaches the non adopted children in the class about adoption.

Marianne Richmond Studios opened in 1991. The company was originally a greeting card company and now has evolved into a publishing company. Marianne takes her personal experiences in life and turns them into books. Marianne lives in Minneapolis, MN with her husband, 4 kids, and dog.

3rd author Patricia Polacco

http://www.patriciapolacco.com/
Now I am really excited. I just learned how to get the picture of the books on my blog! What do you know you can teach an old dog new tricks! lol I would like to thank my group for teaching me! You guys know who you are! Patricia Polacco has written several books for young children. This book teaches children about differences and similarities in each other. It is a good book on acceptence in the classroom.

ch 4

Times have changed dramatically since I have been in school. We use to have to read a book then do a book report. It was always boring. I never enjoyed the activity. I usually tried to pick out a simply book that was approved buy the teacher just so I could get the work over with. I never could understand why the teacher always had to "approve" the book. The books were never anything I liked to read. The report was the worse. You couldn't write what you really thought about the stupid book or the activity. You automatically knew to write what the teacher wanted to hear! If you didn't your paper was an automatic F. We were never allowed to "discuss" things. Nope our generation got to sit in our desk all day without talking because lord forbid if you were caught talking the teacher would beat the hell out of you with a ruler. haha It sounds like something straight out of the 1940 decade but it wasn't. It sounds like something that "doesn't go on around here" but it did. I went to Gillette elementary and I am 38. The chapter is important because it informs teachers from older generations that there are more positive effective methods to teaching! I love the ideal of discussion groups! I love the ideal of letting children be creative and make rap songs, retelling, acting, puppet shows, ect about what they have read.

ch 14

Chapter 14 had some interesting point. It is very important to engage students in writing. The better the reader the better the writer and vice verse. The book says that having students publish their own personal books for their classmates to read encourages and promotes positive outcomes. The students enjoy doing the work and get excited to read their peers work. The students enjoy taking ownership of their published books. Teachers can sit up a certain area in the classroom to display the students work. I think that is very important. I was once in a first grade class and every week the students published a book. One week they published books about frogs. I noticed the children sharing ideals with each other about what they were going to put in their books. The children really loved working on the projects.

author+Immigration children's books

Immigration Children's Books - Preschool through Grade 3
http://us.macmillan.com/author/helenrecorvits
Helen Recorvits author= My name is Yoon, Yoon and the jade bracelet, Yoon and the Christmas mittens
These are cute children's immigration books. The books are important because you might have a child from another country. The books are about a child coming from another country and the child is getting use to our country and different traditions. They are wonderful diversity books helping children relate to the classroom. These books are including our growing Asian population.

ch 3

An important point in chapter 3 is to give the children information on new vocabulary words. I remember when I was in school. The teacher always made us write the word 5 times, make a sentence with the word, and have a spelling test at the end of the week on the new words. did we actually learn anything? I know I really didn't. I did learn to count to 5 and I did learn to spell the word correctly long enough for that week to make the grade. Teachers need to incorporate the new vocabulary words into the classroom. Focus on the words and use them during the week. Use them in the class for the rest of the year. Talk about the words to the children. Find creative ways to use the words.

Chapter 2

I enjoyed reading about culture. If you really think about it within your own individual families there are probably different cultures. I personally encounter this with my family. I find myself trying to relate to the different home environments my cousins kids have. I am positive this is a skill to use in the classroom! If I go to one house the children live at the poverty level. They are always excited to talk about things going on in their world. They have not been exposed to a lot of modern technology;however, know about adult things. They have lots of common sense. If I go to another cousins house which is working class. The children know about modern technology. They have common sense but sometimes forget to use it or sometimes too lazy to use it. I also have the privilege of another cousin that is in a much higher income bracket then the rest of our family. The children at this house assume they know more then anyone, they are better then everyone, and only their opinion matters! They lack common sense but assume their parents will buy it for them! I am sure all students from classrooms come from these backgrounds. It really is important to acknowledge what all the children bring to the classroom. It is important as a teacher because when you are planning a lesson you need to know what the child has and hasn't been exposed to. A child at the poverty level might not have ever been exposed to some of the equipment used in the classroom. It is wise to explain how the equipment operates. If the upper class child knows everything about the equipment consider letting him/her explain the operations to the rest of the class. haha

http://www.beverlycleary.com/index.html One of my favorite children's authors was Beverly Clearly. Many of her book are translated into different languages. The charactors in her books all know each other and appear to be amusing to children. The charactors gear towards both sexes. boys and girls often enjoy the funny little adventures of Henry and his dog Ribsy. This is a helful website if you are a fan of the books.

website

http://www.kidsreads.com/authors/authors.asp This is a helpful website links to children's authors.
I thought chapter one had some interesting points. The point that stuck out in my mind the most was developing good reading attitudes. The teacher really sets the tone for this. If the student has negative experiences it is likely that the student won't enjoy the reading.
